|Longhurst Campaign - War?

We have common ground with the MP Martin Salter and Mrs Longhurstin that we abhor violence and murder. Our argument with them is that destroying civil liberties won't help the potential victims of people like Coutts.
And I believe there IS a trap: which we fall into when we are over-careful to mention the Longhurst campaign every time we speak. We should ignore it at best, and treat it as a parallel but irrelevant issue at worst. My personal belief is that it is a cynical use of real grief by politicians and authoritarians to pursue their own agenda.
I am not defending crime or violence, nor am I promoting BDSM, I am seeking rational and effective use of legislation and police, prison and court resources to apply or amend the laws we already have in place to protect society from those who are unwilling or incapable of controlling themselves.
